Jim Maley for Collingswood Commission
Jim Maley has been instrumental in revitalizing the Borough’s business district, enhancing neighborhood quality of life, improving public infrastructure, and expanding recreation and arts programs—all while maintaining a stable tax system and increasing property values. Under his leadership, Collingswood has taken bold, innovative steps to advance by any measure—whether it's neighborhood vitality, property values, or the strength of the business district. Collingswood has been widely recognized as a model for small-town success by publications such as The New York Times, Forbes, Philadelphia Magazine, USA Today, The Inquirer, and Courier Post, as well as by professional planning and community development organizations.
One of Jim’s key accomplishments as Director of Public Safety was spearheading the creation of Collingswood’s new combined Public Safety Building, which has resulted in greater efficiency and collaboration between police, fire, and EMS services, ensured compliance with modern facility regulations, and enhanced emergency response services for residents. He also facilitated the rehabilitation of blighted properties, launched an abandoned homes program after the housing recession, and led the development of a new Senior Community Center. His leadership was critical in relocating Public Works operations outside the business district, improving efficiency while maintaining fiscal responsibility and holding the line on property taxes. Several of these projects, including the restoration of the Zane School into professional offices, have been recognized with awards from Downtown New Jersey, the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office, and the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.
Jim has been instrumental in securing millions in funding from private, state, federal, and multi-jurisdictional grants, driving transformative projects that revitalize the downtown, enhance walkability and pedestrian safety, and upgrade capital infrastructure and municipal services. His efforts have also strengthened support for first responders and bolstered community safety.
Jim remains committed to strengthening communication with residents. The Borough has expanded transparency efforts, offering regular town forums, public workshops, and interactive live-streamed governing body meetings. Communication channels now include the Town Crier newsletter, informational mailings, e-news updates, and an expanded social media presence. The Borough has also built a YouTube library of public meetings and introduced the Nixle messaging system for real-time alerts and updates.
During the COVID-19 crisis, Jim led a coordinated response that ensured business continuity, public safety, and access to resources. He worked with Borough departments, businesses, and partner agencies to keep services operational and secure CARES Act funding for local recovery efforts. Recognizing the financial hardships many residents faced, Jim and his wife, MaryKay, pivoted their nonprofit, Collingswood Cares, to provide groceries, financial assistance, and essential resources to neighbors in need.
A practicing attorney, Jim’s work in redevelopment and municipal law has earned him recognition throughout the region, including an Achievement in Planning Award from the New Jersey Planning Association. He has been a guest lecturer at The Harvard Kennedy School and is frequently invited to speak about downtown revitalization and community development at state and national conferences.
Jim and MaryKay raised their three children in Collingswood, where they now enjoy time with their seven grandchildren. His dedication to Collingswood is deeply rooted in public service, community engagement, and a commitment to the town’s continued success and evolution.
Jim's future goals for Collingswood focus on strengthening infrastructure, fostering community engagement, and supporting the local economy. Priorities include completing upgrades to the public water system to meet rigorous state and federal environmental standards, continuing road, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure improvements, and expanding recreation programming and park enhancements to improve quality of life for all residents.
He is also committed to enhancing events and community programming, securing funding for key capital projects, and adopting sustainability measures at both the local and regional levels. Supporting small businesses remains a key focus, with initiatives aimed at boosting marketing efforts and increasing foot traffic to help them succeed. Additionally, exploring partnerships and measures to address affordability for struggling families is a priority, ensuring that residents facing economic challenges have access to the resources and support they need.
Above all, Jim remains dedicated to maintaining first-rate public services and ensuring Collingswood continues to be a vibrant, welcoming, and forward-thinking community for all.
